Alarm warning issued; Extreme risk; Greece on highest alert
Crete, Rhodes and Karpathos are under alert today due to an extreme wildfire risk, which has been classified as the highest, Category 5, Greece’s General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection said.
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has notified the relevant state agencies, regions and municipalities in the affected areas so they can remain on heightened alert and be prepared to respond immediately in the event of a wildfire.
Citizens are advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid outdoor activities that could start a fire, including burning dry grass, branches and garden waste, using machinery that produces sparks, such as circular saws and welding equipment, lighting barbecues outdoors, smoking beehives, and discarding lit cigarettes.
