Šapić: Belgrade is a cosmopolitan city. We only ask that our people and country be respected

"There is no Croat, Bosniak, Ruthenian, Slovak or anyone else in this country, in this city, who should feel threatened because they do not belong to the Serbian people," said the president of the Provisional Authority of the City of Belgrade, Aleksandar Šapić

"I will be the first to defend them, if a hair is missing from their head. Also, it is extremely important to emphasize that we must not associate the Ustasha with Croats, I also said that when videos of Gruhonjić and other 'proclaimers from Dubrovnik' appeared in the media , when some tried to equate the Ustashas and the Croats. Belgrade is a cosmopolitan city, a free city, it has always been free and members of all nations and religions should always feel free in it", Šapić said being hosted on "TV Pink" and added:

"But those who don't respect the country they live in, who don't respect our tradition, our Serbian Orthodox Church, who don't have elementary respect for the society they live in, I don't care what religions or nations they are" emphasized Šapić.

Asked to comment on the public reactions caused by his announcement that he would launch an initiative to return Josip Broz to the Croats in Kumrovec, Šapić replied that he wanted to talk about the disastrous influence that the communist regime had on the Serbian people, and that the relocation of Josip Broz from Dedinje represents a symbolic attempt to finally break with the communist legacy and the regime that caused a lot of harm to the Serbian people.

"No one wants to destroy the House of Flowers, but this is about symbolism. I think we must never forget that period of our communist history because it was the most disastrous for the Serbian people. What I am fighting for is to point out clearly that communist period has been falsely presented for decades and start teaching our children the truth in schools. That is why it is symbolically important that Broz no longer rests here. There can be a museum in Dedinje where we will learn about that period in a true way, a museum that we will dedicate to the greats of Serbian history, who defended the Serbian people through many wars, whatever we agree on, it is only important that Josip Broz no longer rests there, because that is the only way we will put an end to the disastrous communist policy once and for all," Šapić concluded.
