The new president said: Be ready; Army on alert
The interim president of South Korea, Choi Sang-mok, called on the army to maintain readiness in order to respond to any provocation from North Korea, the Ministry of Defense announced today.

Choi made the remarks during a visit to the command and control center of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) in downtown Seoul, his first visit to the facility since taking over as acting president in late December.
"While establishing a solid military command system, we need to maintain readiness and immediately respond to any provocation by North Korea," Choi said, according to Kyodo.
He urged the military not to let the country's current political instability discourage them, referring to the political crisis that erupted when suspended South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol tried to impose martial law in December. Several military officials, including former Defense Minister Kim Jong-hyun, have been indicted for alleged involvement in the implementation of martial law.
Choi also stressed the need for military training to be carried out without interruption, and the visit was attended by Acting Defense Minister Kim Seon-ho and JCS Chairman Admiral Kim Myung Soo.
North Korea has recently launched missiles into waters near its shores, including the launch of what it said were strategic cruise missiles from the sea, Kyodo reported.
