Such solutions would only "shift the problem to the next neighboring country, it will not solve it," Avramopoulos said.

Hungary's plans to build a fence along its border with Serbia, to prevent migrants from third countries from entering its territory.

On the other hand, Avramopoulos observed, the EU cannot deprive member states from adopting their own policy as far as border management is concerned.

"Hungary is under pressure. We were talking so far about Italy and Greece, now we added Hungary," Avramopoulos said after his meeting with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

Szijjarto informed the EU official that 67,000 illegal migrants entered Hungary since the start of this year. He also "defended the fence, though the government has yet to say when construction will begin," AP reported.
