It is speculated that the jet had crashed into the sea.

Croatia's index.hr website is reporting that "fuel traces" were allegedly discovered in the sea near the Italian town of Ravena overnight.

The missing F-16 was flying along with another plane when the NATO base in Aviano, northeastern Italy, lost contact, AFP has reported.

The pilot sent his last distress message at around 19:00 CET on Monday, according to Italy's ANSA news agency.

One of the pilots from another jet claims to have heard the message, but that he had not seen the plane crash.
