The statue was unveiled by Serb member of Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency Nebojša Radmanović, Bosnia's Serb entity, RS, President Milorad Dodik, and the mayor of East New Sarajevo, Ljubisa Ćosić.
"Gavrilo Princip's shot was a shot for freedom. His shot was a prelude to what some Europeans were preparing for for years, and Serbs emerged from that war as winners," Radmanović said during the ceremony on Friday.
He added that June 28, St. Vitus Day (Vidovdan) is not only a Serb religious holiday, "but a day of remembrance of the sacrifices and the struggle for freedom," and warned about attempts to rewrite history.
"Today, we have Gavrilo in East Sarajevo, a revolutionary, a man who to us, is one century of hope. We remember the Young Bosnia members and Gavrilo Princip proudly," said Radmanović.
He then noted that the anniversary of the assassination was being marked in Sarajevo as well, but without RS representatives, and asked: "Who is it that they are remembering?"
100 years ago Princip, a Bosnian Serb, shot and killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian throne. The assassination happened as Ferdinand was visiting Bosnia, a territory Austria-Hungary had annexed in 1908.
Addressing the ceremony on Friday, Mayor Ćosić said that Princip was "a hero of the Serb people," and that the statue in East Sarajevo "has its symbolism - because of a combination of the heroic past of the Serb people and the future that will be built by future generations."
The two entities in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the RS and the Muslim-Croat Federation (FBiH), are marking the anniversary separately. There have also been significant differences in the interpretation of the assassination.
The central ceremonies will be taking place on Saturday in Sarajevo, and in Adrićgrad, near Višegrad.
As previously announced, the Andrićgrad event will be attended by top Serbian officials, who also gave up their earlier intention to participate in the Sarajevo gathering, after they learned of its "political, anti-Serb note."

Bosnia was long occupied by the Ottomans, while Greece/Serbia/Romania/Bulgaria got their freedom and independence in the 19th C Bosnia was just annexed by the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. THis empire wanted only to expand even more. The peopke of Bosnia foght the whole 19th C for independence or to join Serbia when Serbie got her Independence.
Also to note history has proven even if Princip did not shoot or the other members of young Bosnians, the Austrians would find another reason to invade Serbia they just wanted to enlarge all the way to Istanbul and the Black sea...
(Mick, 30 June 2014 08:27)
I sort of understand your point here. In Serbs' mentality, a union of nations is similar to occupation from the largest nations in the union because that's how Serbs saw that union called Yugoslavia - as a tool for Serbia to dominate the other nations in the union. No wonder all of the other nations saw Serbs as occupiers and run for the door as soon as they could and wanted to have nothing to do with the Serbs.
(icj1, 28 June 2014 03:39)
The Austro-Hungarian Empire was not a "union of nations" in that the southern Slavs were equals to Austria & Hungary. It was their empire, and the southern Slavs were subjugated to direct rule and occupation.
For the greater majority of Yugoslavia's existence, the country has taken an anti-Serbian policy. In every region, the communist Yugoslav central authorities sought to diminish Serbian national interests wherever it could for the sake of Yugoslav "Brotherhood & Unity". In Kosovo-Metohija, it oversaw a gradual ethnic cleansing of indigenous Serbs. Regions where Serbian communities have lived for centuries were suddenly placed in Yugoslav republics of Croatia and Bosnia. In Montenegro and Macedonia, alternative historical identities were being crafted by the communists to distance these people from Serbia.

This is a day to be celebrated, Happy Vidovdan to all! It is the day when a brave young Serb fired the shot heard round the world, and freed his people from the Austro-Hungarian empire. After the Serbian victory in WWI, and later WWII, let's not forget that today we are under great pressure to bow to NATO war criminals and forget our history. Serbia needs to learn from history, that nothing good ever comes from appeasing unfriendly occupiers. We know who are our friends, and who are our enemies, who bombed us and who protected us, and we will once again be victorious as always. Time is on our side.
Cheers!!

I think everybody needs to be reminded that princp belonged to a group called the Young Bosniaks which consisted of Muslims, and serbs and whose aim was to create a unified nation not under another dictatorship of another empire. What is most disappointing is that many bosnian Muslim have celebrated Princp in the past even in song as their freedom fighter and hero.

If there's anyone commemorating terrorists in the former Yugoslavia, its Croats who idolize Pavelic and Gotovina. As for Bosnians, their hatred of Princip is a cheap attempt at distancing themselves from Serbs because of the 1990s.

Truth, apparently you're not too educated and don't know basic history, as well as illiterate and didn't understand the article. Serbs WON the war and KILLED the occupier.
Gavrilo Princip, a member of Young Bosnia, was a group who planned and successfully executed their plot to assinate the leader of a foriegn nation that annexed their country. Young Bosnia comprised of Serbs, Croats AND Muslims, who all lived in Bosnia and wanted to live in their own country ruled by those that live in it. Not some Hungarian "Ruler" who ruled an empire called the Austrian-Hungarian empire. There is nothing Austrian or Hungarian in Bosnia, so why should they submit to their domination? The way I see it, a foreign ruler annexed and wanted to rule over a people they never lived with or had anything to do with. Different language, history, nationality, EVERYTHING. For that greed, he paid with his life. I'm sorry his wife was also killed for what its worth. She was an unintended casualty. As for the Archduke, he deserved it. If a Serb, Bosnian Muslim, or Croat wanted to annex and rule over Austria or Hungary, and an Austrian/Hungarian killed them... Would that killer be a terrorist? a Murderer? Or a liberator.
Please reply with your answer... else be a Hypocrite.

(Mia, 28 June 2014 00:30) Sure under a Serb despots that had Croatian democrats murdered in Serbias "parliment" den of thieves. For that Serb despots placed martial Serb thievery on the majority of the country. To rob it at will. One dictator repaced by even worse Serb despot thieving criminals. Serbs are allways true to their criminal form then and now. That no one wants to do anything with you told Serbia Yugo and it went criminaly beserk. Man you Serbs are delusional even think you are heavanly people seek help Serbs before you totaly lose it.
(Lenard, 28 June 2014 13:49)
You love occupation, you are being occupied by the EU right now and you served as loyal puppets to the German Nazis.
(Ari Gold, 27 June 2014 18:33)
I sort of understand your point here. In Serbs' mentality, a union of nations is similar to occupation from the largest nations in the union because that's how Serbs saw that union called Yugoslavia - as a tool for Serbia to dominate the other nations in the union. No wonder all of the other nations saw Serbs as occupiers and run for the door as soon as they could and wanted to have nothing to do with the Serbs.
(icj1, 28 June 2014 03:39)
This is a day to be celebrated, Happy Vidovdan to all! It is the day when a brave young Serb fired the shot heard round the world, and freed his people from the Austro-Hungarian empire. After the Serbian victory in WWI, and later WWII, let's not forget that today we are under great pressure to bow to NATO war criminals and forget our history. Serbia needs to learn from history, that nothing good ever comes from appeasing unfriendly occupiers. We know who are our friends, and who are our enemies, who bombed us and who protected us, and we will once again be victorious as always. Time is on our side.
Cheers!!
(Dragan, 28 June 2014 13:59)
Again the minority Serbs and Serbia provoking the majority in the country of Bosnia with a Serb terrorist statue. Also with the fake Andrićgrad aka Višegrad where Serb criminals terorist did [link] horendus barbaric crimes.
(Lenard, 27 June 2014 17:20)
WOW! Fake Republika Srpska, fake Andricgrad...it seems that everything that is alive and well to you is "fake". Is this how you comfort yourself with the fact that Republika Srpska exists and Bosnia is falling apart?
Of course you would call someone who assassinated an occupier a "terrorists". You love occupation, you are being occupied by the EU right now and you served as loyal puppets to the German Nazis. Freedom and independence aren't two things that Croats have ever really valued, have they?
(Ari Gold, 27 June 2014 18:33)
Thanks for reading... it's fun exposing all the Hypocrites who hate Gavrilo

well lenard, it was a croatian by the name of josip who officially made pricip a hero. you might recall having to visit the spot while you were being learned.
(sheldon, 27 June 2014 19:25)

You have finally put sj in the place you have steering him for 6 months. That is the corner where his well articulated, but utterly false arguments are discarded and he results to name calling. He's like a lot of smart people in that so much he knows just isn't true.
Congrats

To debate a point you need people that know their topic of discussion. So far all Albanians who comment on this site have no idea what they are talking about especially ICJ who thinks he is articulate and witty when it’s the complete opposite.
I do not suffer fools lightly.

There is only one tool here and you are it. One can always trust you to come up with the most absurd conclusion where you add 2 and 2 and come out with 77. Maybe that’s why you are the Albanian Einstein.
P.S. AE= Albanian Einstein

Yep, sure, with a dictator like Tito who did whatever he wanted and he was not a Serb. How do you think he would work for Serbs only and against his own kind?
Are you as silly as them and believe that?
