The WW3 comment was a joke. For WW3 to happen, Russia would have to be involved and I can't see them starting a war for Serbia, can you? If Russia can't start a war for the ethnic Russian majority in eastern Ukraine right on its borders, they won't send a single airplane to help NATO-surrounded Serbia. They are only playing along with Serbia to gain leverage elsewhere. If you really can't see that, you're a fool.

Kosovo's independence is not up for grabs, Serbia will recognize it willingly or unwillingly. The agreement that Trump is offering is only for Serbia to save face and gain some points for good faith with the West. There won't be a war, because Serbs learned their lesson and won't be as foolish as in the 90s anymore.

There won't be any major upheaval in Serbia either when your government recognizes Kosovo. Maybe some radicals protesting for a couple of weeks, no longer. The simple reason is because whatever happens in Kosovo has no impact whatsoever on the lives of 99% of Serbs. Do you get it?

  2. Chi, we all know some European and some NATO countries (Greece, Spain, etc.) would be against, but we also know they will never change their stance due to internal politics. The more important countries (US, UK, Germany, France, etc.) will never allow little stubborn countries to dictate global policy. Kosovo needs the support of all its allies, but it doesn't take much for people to get fed up and a decisive leader to say f... European bureaucracy and do what's best for the people.

Oh, and if you think the US will pull out of the Balkans because of an agreement with Russia, you're totally delusional. The Balkans is not Syria, it's in the heart of Europe and a place where NATO members are the majority.

Serbs certainly don't want WW3 but you guys are really pushing for it by constantly making bad decisions.
I really think that because you guys know that Serbia doesn't want a war you feel free to act up and push and push.
You feel that without a war nobody can stop you, so if anyone is going to start a war it will be you.
It will get to the point of no return.

Is this too far fetched for you?

  4. Chi, we have been through this before. Kosovo will make a sovereign decision to join Albania. Serbs will bark for about two weeks, just like they did after the 100% tariffs and the army decisions. They will kick and scream bloody murder and threaten to start world war 3 :) By the end of week 2, it will all be back to normal. Do you really think this scenario is too far-fetched?
    (Genti, 4 January 2019 15:07

Genti, No one wants to start WW3, but we all know that the Balkans are a powder keg that can easily be sparked. The region is basically a chess board where the super powers play at our expense. And yes, I do think it's far fetched, not because of Serbs, but because most of Europe would be against it - for all the reasons you know, but don't want to admit. It's easy for the US to try and dictate policy here because it doesn't affect them across the pond, but your neighbors, excluding Croatia and maybe Macedonia and Bosnia will have a different opinion. If it wasn't for the US needing a base in the region, we wouldn't be having this conversation... if they ever decide to pull out because of peace agreement with Russia, then the dynamic will certainly change.

  11. Complete overreaction. The border between France & Germany is also open, so what is the big deal? Albania does not have the infrastructure to absorb more territory in any case, it can barely govern what it does hold.
    (Nikolle, 3 January 2019 11:15)

The most sane comment on this thread. Indeed, the border between Austria and Italy is nonexistent and South Tyrol is still a part of Italy. The border between Serbia and Bosnia is little more than a rhetorical showpiece and RS is still part of Bosnia. We're also talking about integrated border management, which is the same thing proposed and implemented between Kosovo and the rest of Serbia.

The statement is nonsensical and the comments from the predictable chorus of keyboard warriors is just as asinine.

  12. Because of open travel within the EU, I generally find western European countries less safe to visit than, just as an example, Serbia. But in both cases concerns are quite minimal. It would be nice to speed up cross-border movement as long as proper security checks are in place, whether that be between Serbia and Macedonia; Kosovo and Albania; or any other borders. I don't have experience with the Kosovo-Albania border as both times I visited Albania I crossed from Montenegro.

Thereís an Albanian story about a wolf ( serb) and a Shqiptare (sheep).
The sheep was glancing at its reflection at the water in the lake .

The wolf confronts the sheep and demands to know why the sheep was disturbing the peace by daring to look at its reflection.

    Moral of the story ...

Donít trust silly complaints from a meat eating animal ....

  15. Iíve never heard Albania express any such notion, all Albanians support a free and independent Kosovo nothing more, nothing less. The border issue is more so to do with the freedom of movement between goods and people. If anyoneís ever been to the border between Albania and Kosovo, itís a hectic mess and yet they still want to stay locked and divided.
    (Guest, 3 January 2019 17:52)

Guest, I'll go out on a limb and agree with your statement. Your right, it is just freedom of movement for people and goods; however, this is for NOW, and if allowed, could spread into greater consequences later. The one thing we've learned about the Albanians is that they are deceitful, untrustworthy, and will not honor any agreements. This is why there is such a hoopla about this issue NOW, because it can only snowball from here on. The talk of Greater Albania was started back in Tito's time, and I think KiM Albs and the other Albos see an opportunity to pounce on this notion for once and all - however, I say good luck, no one else in Europe will agree, and I think you people are doing yourselves a disservice by trying - it's just making you look bad like the army decision and the 100% tax. C'mon, if you were an outsider looking in, and you saw your leadership making these moves, what would you honestly think. Whiners? Playing victim? Hiding behind bullies? Or, just plain causing instability, and instigating hostilities, in the most volatile part of Europe, maybe the world?

  23. "an attempt by Albania to violently annex a part of our territory"

Go ahead and declare war on Albania, see how quickly you get wiped out. There will be no violent annexation, it will be a peaceful mutually agreed upon union. There's nothing Serbia can do about it.

The Albanians and the West have already set their deadline in 2019 for a mutual recognition agreement to end Kosovo's current isolation. If Serbia doesn't want to agree, a union of Kosovo with Albania will become unavoidable. Nobody will wait endlessly for Serbia to recognize Kosovo.

  26. So much fake nonsense in this article, which is ok as it is coming from a Serbian MP.

    But this:

"When you look at everything that has happened over the past several decades related to the Kosmet (Kosovo and Metohija) problem, it is quite clear that Albania, due to its territorial pretensions towards a part of our territory, created the terrorist KLA ("Kosovo Liberation Army") in its territory, provoked a war in Kosovo and Metohija, and secretly took managed it. In that way, the KLA was in fact the striking wing of the Republic of Albania, for the sake of forcibly adding a part of our territory to Albania," Drecun said.

I would laugh if it wasn't so damn sad! Back to the drawing board Drecun.
