What's "going on" in Croatia is quite simple. The fascists have taken control of Croatia's government mind, body, and soul to the point that no politician in the country can expect to get ahead without paying lip service to xenophobia and claiming that war crimes committed in the 1990s was done in defense of the national interest. I've been to Croatia multiple times and I can say without a shred of doubt that nationalistic slogans and songs from the NDH are not only tolerated but quietly promoted by people in power in some warped distortion of national pride. This means that Croats are either woefully ignorant of their own history, or they're just plain stupid. No other way to say it.

Croatian Ustasa fascism has been reborn with Tudjman and now Kolinda. No Serbian chocolate will turn into "No Serbs, Dogs or Jews" as it was under the Pavelic regime throughout Croatia. This is from lack of learning and history especially from Tito and his Communist apparatchik. The checkerboard has been a Croatian symbol since the Slavs moved to the European southeastern peninsula. It was the symbol under Bosnian King Tvrtko, under the Austro-Hungarian empire and it was the symbol under the first kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The Serbian government and people should make that perfectly clear as the checkerboard was abused by the Ustasa. The Ustasa and Pavelic added the "U" to the checkerboard. Civilized people do not do such things. It is a serious issue when a country's leaders allow for this. Let's hope for an improvement soon.

only a word?
it seems to me that a whole lot of croatia became insensed when seslj just said a word. he was even brought up on charges of war crimes, for saying just a word.
it is not just a word unless speaker and listener both agree that it is just a word. if one or the other takes offense, the word has power and meaning beyond being just anything, let alone just a word.
a swastika is just a handful of lines, yet it, just being black lines on a white background evoke a tremendous emotional response, one orders of magnitude more than the handful of lines on a piece of paper, in most cases. their all just lines, they're all just symbols, they're all just words, until they evoke fear, until they embolden hatred, until they encourage someone to go beyond just words. humans hear just words, and bind meaning, emotion and understanding to those words.
the word chetnik was a choice word for you to use. why did you pick that word, when a multitude of other words would have been sufficient to get your point across. you chose a word, a specific word to evoke a specific emotion, from within or external. the word ustashe is similar in nature, as is the word nazi. when those words are simply throw around do you yourself not take these words as just words.
please don't talk out of both sides of your face. if you know words have power, then don't pretend the words you like don't and the ones you dislike do. they all carry power with them.

I just hope that all people regardless of ethnic backround, religion, race or creed cared more for the common man/women and greater good of this world. All of the suffering of the past and present....When will it all end??????????A small group of influential political elites run the world for the majority. The sad part about it if it can happen in Allepo Syria it can happen anywhere. Im not talking about some socialist dream/ utopia. I just think that enough is enough.
