And you think this wouldn't have an impact on the EU countries in question?
Maybe that's all these countries need to rethink their membership in the EU. Watch EU crumble.

The countries in question will benefit from the south stream pipeline but not to the extent apparently you think. It is not going to make or break any country, including Russia. No country is going to base their membership in the EU on it. But members in the EU are bound to the laws of the EU, while Serbia is not the success of the south stream is based on it being able to carry oil from one place to another. So Serbia cannot just say we are not going to do anything and the EU can take it or we just won't join. Whatever Serbia does has to be in unison with the other countries or it is going to lose big time.
Maybe someday you will realize that Serbia is not the huge diamond on top of the mountain that everyone is willing to do anything to obtain. Serbia needs the rest of the region MORE than it needs Serbia.

Great idea there Peggy, lets see the South Stream would enter Serbia through Bulgaria an EU country and exit into Hungary an EU country. So if the EU forces the EU countries to comply with the laws and it takes years to renegotiate,

This has absolutely nothing to do with "EU law", if it did the issue would have come up years ago. This is just a political pissing match between the EU and Russia over Ukraine.

Great idea there Peggy, lets see the South Stream would enter Serbia through Bulgaria an EU country and exit into Hungary an EU country. So if the EU forces the EU countries to comply with the laws and it takes years to renegotiate, then Serbia will have a pipeline that crosses the country but is empty no oil flowing in nor flowing out, meanwhile repaying Russia billions in construction costs. But you will have really showed the EU that you cannot be pushed around.
Serbia needs many many more leaders who think the way you do. Probably increase the size of your Serbian neighborhood in Australia.

LOL! The British are seeking to exit the EU for exactly those reasons. They don't want Brussels to dictate their freedom. Look at it as an example of where the EU is heading. Serbia is an occupied land and fighting for its freedom. The EU is a failed project.

I can't believe the Serb leadership was so stupid as to get themselves in this unenviable situation. That's what they get for trusting the Russians. The blame falls on Serbia's leaders for not having read the agreements before signing them. Now they are screwed with no way out!
(Marko K., 6 December 2013 09:12)

Can you explain how exactly Serbia is "screwed" and why Serbia should even find a way out of this agreement? First off, this is a pan-European project, countries within the EU are taking part. Second, South Stream has German, Italian etc. companies that have a stake in this project. This provides Serbia with energy security, sees a large portion of this run through a large part of Serbia, will provide Republika Srpska direct access to the pipeline as well too.

So, care to explain what exactly Serbia is "screwed" for? If it's for joining the EU, yes you are probably right. If Serbia continues to waste time trying to join the EU when it should be focusing on modernizing its society, then yes Serbia is more than screwed. And it will continue screwing itself the more time it wastes trying to join the EUSSR as its likely in its final decade before collapse. Serbia wont even get in even if they know its about to fall apart, this is the biggest waste of Serbia's time.

With all due respect I think my Serbian friends are missing the point here. The EU demands are designed to force Russia to cede a large part of its total control especially in regards to its monolistic pricing and therefore make the entire process more competitive and democratic.Shalom to my friends in Serbia.

Do these countries get thrown out of EU and Serbia doesn't get to join?
Whow, is that all they got?

Serbia is NOT in the EU so how dare they try to control it. I hope Serbian people can see now what sort of a club they want to join.

MikeD

I'm sure that it wouldn't be 'a breach of law' if the pipepline had gone through only EU countries. Perhaps the EU is nervous knowing that when entry talks commence, the Serbian economy will be well off and will likely exit entry into the EU altogether. This is yet another example of flexing laws that only exist to enhance economies for those who joined the EU in the early days and control it today.

marKo

Since Nabuco went down the drain, the EU wants to be cut into the deal.

It's legal position is weak and if they sue, Russia will likely prevail, and even then if Russia didn't prevail because Russia will argue a, that the EU knew but did nothing until it was too late and therefor lost any right and B,it is an anti-trade measure not in keeping with international norms. If Russia lost, it could take a realist approach to the law and do it any way.

This is designed to punish Russia and make them pay. It is indicative of woresening relations between East and West. As always it will make regular people on boths sides lose. In my oppinion we should avoid another cold war, and starting a trade war in this weak economy is a dumb move.

Klaus-Dieter Borchardt said the deals were "in breach of EU law and will have to be changed."

• He could also add that the DRANG NACH OSTEN politics has not died with Friedrich 1 Barbarossa and Adolf Hitler.

Commissioner Gunther Oettinger "had just sent a letter to Russian energy minister Alexander Novak explaining the situation and asking him 'to look positively' into the possibility of re-negotiating the deals with the countries concerned."

• He could also add that a new Reich is almost formed and thus the started cold war between Russia and Germany will be transmitted to the dominions.

Southstream is a political project which will never make a dollar profit. It will cost 30 billion Dollar. It's aim is to obstruct Europe and make some oligarchs and the chief oligarch Putin more powerful and corrupt. In Ukraine we see how this ends when not countered. It is necessary to end this evil project and send it straight to hell, along all the quislings who support it.

EU Dude

pre 10 godina

How convenient for the European Commission. This is the same one that argues Gazprom's gas prices are anti-competitive and 'distort the market' because the US produces gas and sell it at a much lower cost, even though a) it is not exported in any significant quantities on the international market, b) gas price has been traditionally linked directly to the price of oil for the last few decades. The Commission argues that point b is no longer relevant. In its opinion.

When pen pushers like the Commission start to reinterpret rules and agreements in their favor (the favor of their paymasters) like this, then how exactly can it claim to uphold the Rule of Law'? If the Commission can be so easily and willfully corrupted like this, then what is the point of the EU? It's just becomes another gangster group that demands you play by its rules however they see fit to interpret them, or else.

Is the Commission really going to fu*k all these states and stop alternate routes of energy into to the EU? This is going to be a big fight that will loose 'Europe' a lot of credibility amongst member states and EU citizens. The 'haves', like Germany and their Nordstream pipeline, and the 'have nots' like those in South Stream who are now being threatened.

It will be interesting to see if the Germans think it is worth picking such a huge fight. If not, the Commission demands will die a quiet death or amended out of existence.

The EU is clearly trying to find any possible thing it could to keep Serbia from clearing hurdles to join the EU. This failing organization is likely going to lose a member before it is to gain one in the next 10 years. Croatia was the last member for a long time, and they had to let Croatia in because this German dominated club had to repay little Germany for her "sacrifices".

I really hope the Serbian government doesn't cave (again) and give in to scrapping the South Stream. This project gives Serbia energy security and the EU are just sour their Nabucco fantasy is not coming to fruition meanwhile the South Stream is a reality.

Also, it's funny when pro-western daily Blic attacked the Russian ambassador for saying Serbia should not join NATO (an alliance that bombed it, as if that even needs to be said) for interfering in Serbia, meanwhile the EU has been openly "guiding" the Serbian government in its most important decisions. What's worse is EU countries are actually a part of this South Stream Pipeline. Even German companies are taking part in it and have ownership stake in it. Why don't you bother them? It's because the EU has a hard-on for Serbia and always will.

Oh well, the EU is the USSR of our time. Its going to fall miserably within the next 10 years and it will probably lead to chaos and extremism. Serves the central planners in Brussels right.

Another fine example of how the EU and its bureaucracy is destroying the economies of smaller members. The EU is not interested in improving but only in controlling their economy by taking over all their profitable corps. Russia is giving these countries a chance to be finanically self sufficient but the EU will not like that.

This is exactly why the Ukraine rejected the EU. Russia is the better option and the EU doesn't like competition, so they play dirty. Soon, it will backfire.

LOL! The British are seeking to exit the EU for exactly those reasons. They don't want Brussels to dictate their freedom. Look at it as an example of where the EU is heading. Serbia is an occupied land and fighting for its freedom. The EU is a failed project.

Peggy, I thought you have lived in Australia all your life. Why then, do you speak like as if you are a Serbian who lives in Serbia? So some loyalty to the country that feeds you.

You thought correctly. I have lived here all my life. BTW, nobody feeds me. I work and feed myself.
I contribute to this country not the other way around mate.

So what happens when there is no renegotiation?
Do these countries get thrown out of EU and Serbia doesn't get to join?
Whow, is that all they got?

Serbia is NOT in the EU so how dare they try to control it. I hope Serbian people can see now what sort of a club they want to join.

Can't agree more, EU Dude, thanx for posting

This has absolutely nothing to do with "EU law", if it did the issue would have come up years ago. This is just a political pissing match between the EU and Russia over Ukraine.

And you think this wouldn't have an impact on the EU countries in question?
Maybe that's all these countries need to rethink their membership in the EU. Watch EU crumble.
(Peggy, 6 December 2013 22:49

With all due respect I think my Serbian friends are missing the point here. The EU demands are designed to force Russia to cede a large part of its total control especially in regards to its monolistic pricing and therefore make the entire process more competitive and democratic.Shalom to my friends in Serbia.
