I totally share the view of this nobelist. In present-day EU I see two dominating trends among EU leaders: First is to cut losses of players in virtual economy at the expense of taxpayers and the second is to guide EU towards strict federation at the expense of democracy. The 'austerity' measures are destroying national economies making it impossible for them to ever to pay back those debts created by banksters (bank mafia, spekulants) of virtual economy and their political cabals. At grassroots people have become the victim of parasitic credit capitalism and its unelected institutions. During last five years emergency economics has made it possible to replace democracy with debtocracy. In my opinion It is slow motion death spiral of economic collapse and democracy. Hmm, maybe things would look a bit more gloomy, if You examine what Slovenians, Hungarians, Romanians and Bulgarians really think of the development in their countries since becoming EU-members.

Yes we can all witness what the EU do to ordinary "serfs" of the EU in Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Cyprus, Slovenija and soon many other to follow.
Titanic also looked pretty safe when it sailed off from Southampton. In contrast, especially the 3rd class passengers discovered the truth, when it was way all to late, and suffered the consequenses. Hopefully the Serbs wont behave like a Turkey voting for Christmas, when the time comes (if the "4th EU-Reich" still exists by then). Protect Your own necks, and that of Your Children and grand-Children. Don't let Your-self bee fooled by the "Butcher from Brussels," or his "henchmen in Belgrade."

By the way, the situation in Norway the first time they applied for EU-membership in 1970 (BEFORE they got oil) was a lot more like it is in present Serbia today. A lot more of low income workers and small farmers etc. And the people still voted NO!
It is still possible to defend Your freedom, and that of Your children, even if You're NOT wealthy.

Of course the uk families are doing very well. One has just to look at the high street which is full of 99p shops, charity shops and food banks. (Gotsefromohrid, 25. maj 2013 17:33) There are many people struggling to feed their families as it is. If we left ths EU, life would be even harder for these poor families.

When considering Serbia and the EU, it's important to compare countries that are almost identical in every way to Serbia - Switzerland, Iceland and Norway and certainly not Romania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Poland, etc.

That is a lie, average people are beneficiaries of the EU too. Households in the UK are on average between £3,000 and £4,000 better of per year due to the EU. Then there is freedom of movement, subsidised food, cultural developments (such as the survival of the Welsh language), freedom of movement, lack of visas, redevelopment projects, a join political voice, cross-boarder co-operation, common security ect.

However the EU does need political reform to make it even more democratic and stop fat-cat politicians for benefiting too much.

These are not good times, but time passes.

The EU was formed after the wars, and has done much to bring countries together.

There are those in the Balkans who would prefer isolation - and possibly they would prefer to settle recent accounts by a return to violent means. Fortunately, they will not be allowed to play that game.

The EU is as important for a number of reasons - and they are not all economic.

So the Europhile PM is gone?? lol now I'm 100% sure Iceland won't join the EU... It was no good for them anyway as their economy is heavily dependant on fishing and tourism + their economy recovered as they devalued their currency after their government went bankrupt, which Eurozone countries can't do, so it'd be pretty dull for them to join the euro.. I don't know about Serbia, it's not as rich obviously, so maybe, it's good for Serbia to join, maybe, just don't compare the 2 countries, they're vastly different. Iceland for the record is in the EU single market and the Schengen area, in what is called the EEA/EFTA... That's good enough for them, they are still very much connected with other EU countries.

This man is talking a lot of sense. The only beneficiaries of the EU are the politicians like Lajcak who know nothing other than to feed from the trough which their greedy snouts have found a home for. The sooner this institution is disbanded the better for everyone.
