But another fact is: Kosovo became Europe's main drug hub. While nobody with a clear mind would say that the current Serbian government has mafia ties, it's an open secret (you can read it even in western intelligence agency reports) that the current Kosovo government has these ties, the high ranking politicians belong to the very same mafia clans or are former KLA 'freedom fighters' who were financed last but not least by the drug mafia. No wonder that there's no will to eliminate this drug mafia in Kosovo. What I don't understand why EULEX which is responsible doesn't take actions. Probably for the same reasons (which I cannot understand, neither) why NATO troops tolerate the drug production in Afganhistan.
(Comm. Parrisson, 6 May 2012 07:19)
Some food for thought. During the 1990's Milosevic in his crack down closed down all the state factories, schools etc supplying Albanians with jobs. The result was no legal means to support their families in Kosovo(Of course this was the plan to get them all to leave) The only opportunity for those who did not have support from family that had left the region was to join in the criminal elements. Drug and human trafficking. Ironically, following 1999, Kosovo was under the police and justice sector of the UN and then EU. One would think that would have made Kosovo one of the more secure regions of the balkans. However, an ineffective network and the lack of a unified plan to rebuild the economy of Kosovo allowed for the problems to grow.
Not a justification of the issue but to fix the problem must understand the problem.
If the status of Kosovo had been settled within the 3 year timeframe, you might be seeing a different story now. Serbia has no chance to retake Kosovo so its goal is to try and keep Kosovo in limbo for as long as possible. This is only going to perpetuate the issue.
Kosovo does need to distance itself from its former leaders but this will take time. History shows that the people who lead a country to its freedom become the primary leaders in the creation. Once established new leaders are created.
As far as Afghanistan goes NATO started with huge Poppy Elimination Programs, but considering 90% of Afghanistan economy was based on it, they had no plan of how to replace it.

Really, the albanians are at the center of drug and other traffiking in the balkans (with some help from the turks). EUROPOL's annual OCTA (Organized Crime & Threat Assessment) report sets it all out in black and white:

Nobody denies these facts, there are huge mafia structures in Serbia as well as in Albania and Kosovo. And no need to discuss which are the bigger ones, and it's clear that the majority of the people are not connected to these clans.

Notice how they didn't give the name of the 'Serbian' citizens. It's obvious that we are dealing with Albanians who hold Serb citizenship.

Let's not forget that they were careful not to mention ethnicity but only nationality. Serbian citizen can mean almost anyone. There is more than one ethnicity in Serbia and since they were all cooperating nicely I would think that these "Serbian Citizens" are not Serbs but Serbian citizens of Albanian ethnicity.
This is not to say that Serbs cannot be criminals. We have seen some good ones but Albanians wouldn't work with Serbs. They are rivals not partners.

Two Albanians, who live in Italy, were middlemen and a Belgian citizen of Kosovo Albanian descent was in charge of transportation of the narcotics. He used to transport the drugs to Austria in his car."

The Albanians were clearly the money makers in this arrangement. Without the Albanians, the Serbs would have had nothing to move. The Albanians collect the fat cash and the Serbs scramble to break up the load for low level distribution. The Albanians get the easy money, the Serbs get to sweat. The real question here is, "How did they get both the middlemen and the distributors at the same time?" Usually you get one or the other, but not both.
(Paul, 5 May 2012 21:45) this why you albanians never make it anywhere do you know anything about business are what? the middle men make less and they scramble to divide what they make and take the risk and the serbs are the bosses who do less but make more because they (serbs) bought it cheap and charged the albanians more and have to do nothing while the albanians have to sell it on the streets to make money for themselves and take a big risk...

This goes to show that its silly when all of us start pointing fingers and wasting pixels talking about Albanians or Serbians being mafia/drug dealers etc. Both sides are heavily involved in it. This is a fact. If we are going to waste time out of our days to write at b92 lets talk about politics instead of "Serbs are drug dealers" No "Albanians are drug dealers" No. "Serbs are drug dealers". We can go in circles with the topic of Mafia and drugs kind of like a hamster running around on one of those wheels. Lets discuss something constructive like where realistically things are going with Kosova and Serbia and the region. Im guilty myself of contributing to the mudslinging, but its hard not to when everyone else is. Anyway, its pretty pathetic and embarrassing for all of us in the region when our people have become mafia and drug dealers. Nothing to feel proud about. Just look at the contrast between Scandinavian countries and our Balkans. Its pathetic! We look like animals with clothing compared to them. Primitive at best. Would be great if things changed for the better in my lifetime.

It's amazing how drug handlers and dealers are the only people of two ethnicities (Serbian/Albanian) that get along so well. This is a perfect example of politics being the cause of splitting people up, and turning people against one another. Where there are no politics the grass is much greener on both sides. And the worst part is that people believe that politics and politicians serve the people when in fact politicians and politics only serve their own interests and then people are lied too to believe that politicians care for them as long as they support them.
If these drug dealers can put aside their differences and do business with one another let's do take them as an example and do the same.
Politicians all they do is remind us everyday what our differences are and point to those differences to get us to choose a side. Think about this, imagine we turned off our TVs, radios, and did not read newspapers, do you still think you would hate one ethnicity as much as you do listening to our "glorious" politicians?

I bet Serbia politicians and K-Albanians when they meet in forums laugh and share tips how to best send money abroad for least fees.
