Sorry I meant Ustashas(not Ustases) and another question that pops in my mind are if Croatia today has some neo-Ustasha movement do they pay tribute to the Nazis,neo-Nazis even 2nd World War Japanese troops?

Where I read the statement that the brutalities of the Ustases was so extreme that even their Nazi masters were shocked at the brutality of Croatian army in World War 2, will anyone care to provide a description of the types of brutal acts the Croats committed in World War 2 that even the Germans didn't commit and/or disapproved of. Also even though this article didn't mention anything about Japan and Japanese people, can anyone confirm if the Ustases were worse or just as bad as the Japanese army in the duration of World War 2. The only reasons I'm inquisitive is because Japan was an ally to Germany and I sometimes feel that the Japanese military was more brutal than the German military in their mistreatment of their foes.

There was a comment alleging that the Catholic Church supported the Ustashe regime which is utterly FALSE. The Catholic Church NEVER recognized the puppet state of the NDH and almost all Catholic clergy were opposed to the fascists. It is true that they became aware of what was going on, but what realistically could they do about it?

As for Stepinac's so-called "support" he openly wrote Pavelic to strongly condemn Jasenovac when he found out about it. Stepinac also saved the lives of many Jews and Serbs by ordering the clergy to allow these people to pretend to convert to Catholicism.

In 1941, Stepinac wrote to the Croatian clergy: "The role and task of Christians is on the first place to save people. When this time of madness and wildness is over, only those will remain in our Church who converted out of their own conviction, while others, when the danger is over, will return to their faith." Stepinac also gave another instruction to his clergy to issue the certificate of baptism to endangered Jews and Serbs.

The Germans were astounded that Pavelic got away with so openly denouncing and opposing the regime. Glaise von Herstenau, a German Nazi general in Zagreb, declared: "If any bishop in Germany were speaking this way, he would not descend alive from his pulpit!"

Reading the comments here, it's as if some people take special pride in either being ignorant or being untruthful about historical facts! Instead of swallowing and regurgitating communist propaganda, educate yourselves and most importantly think for yourselves!!!!

When will the followers of Christ, Orthodox and Catholics alike, sense the urge of putting aside the political differences that others imposed on them? The present situation is putting the craddle of Christianity in greater danger, Antiochian Christianity still exists only far away from Antioch, in Lebanon and Syria, Constantinpolis exists no more, Jerusalem is turned to a mixture of pagan tourism and christian zionism, not a center of holy pilgrimage, Alexandria and North Africa is shut down, Mesopotamia, the land where monastic life started has been emptied abruptly from any Christian presence only lately.
The craddle is now being relentlessly emptied by those who keep the division of Christians alive. It is matter of reflexion, and a matter of time to when will come the turn of Europe.

It seems to me that everytime somebody posts a factual statememnt about the Chetniks as fighters against the evils of Nazism and Communism, or about the brutality of the Croatian Ustase, their comments get rated down, why??? Perhaps some are in denial. The Catholic Church not just in Croatia but in the Vatican at the time was perfectly aware of what the Ustase were doing, yet they not only supported the Ustase regime but it was Catholic monks that helped Ante Pavelic escape to Argentina after the war.

The Croatian clergy were the leaders of the murders of Serbian civilians - even children. The Croatian nuns were starving Serbian children and babies to death and there were concentration camps of Serbs run by Croats.
And now the Pope talks about family values - but only if they are Croat families - the Croats/Clerical fascists were fine at murdering Serbian families.

The Orthodoxian clerical fascists glorify the Cetnik movement which provenly collaborated with the Nazis. The Battle of Neretva exposed the whole world to what Serbian fascists along with the German 7th SS Division were capable of when they stormed the Partizans. To bad for that royalist scum that they were completely obliterated by the Partizans. Even the Western Allies stopped support when the Serbian treachery became public.
(JohnC., 7 June 2011 19:40)

The only ones who collaborated with the Nazis were

-the Croats with their Ustasha forces
-the Muslim Bosniaks with their SS Handzar division
-the Albanians with their 23. SS Skenderbeg division

from beginning to the end of the war.

Serbs fought either in the Partizans or in the Chetniks AGAINST the German fascists(that is why the Germans dont like Serbs in general),both of these movements were nearly 100% Serbian right until 1944 when some Croats and Bosnians saw that Germany would lose the war and they with it and that is why they switched over to the Partisans.
The Chetnicks were against taking enemies in our ranks, and for the establishment of a Serbian state.
Unfortunately the Serbian people decided to go with those Communists, nonetheless the Chetniks were the only liberation army that stood for Serbian democracy and fought against Hitler and against any totalitarianism!
For that their leaders were posthumely awarded with the Legion of Honour, and US president Ronald Reagan said that it was a terrible mistake to let the Serbian democracy fighters down over those Communist animals!

Never has a pope visited Jasenovac.
This pope chose to visit Stepanic’s grave and avoids Jasenovac ….. a clear message that this pope does not desire dialogue and reconciliation with the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Unfortunate, terribly unfortunate.

The link provided is the entire text of Avro Manhattan’s book, The Vatican Holacoust.
http://www.reformation.org/holocaus.html
It reads in part....

The official organ of the Archbishopric of Zagreb, Kato-licki List, No. 16, 1941, declared that the independent State of Croatia had been created by an all-powerful Providence. The Catholic Church, it concluded, prayed God that the New Croatia should find its fulfillment.

“Archbishop Stepinac, on April 28, 1941, issued a pastoral letter, in which he asked the clergy to respond without hesitation to his call that they take part in the exalted work of defending and improving the Independent State of Croatia, declaring that from then onwards in the "resurrected" Croatian State the Church would be able in complete freedom to preach "the invincible principles of eternal truth and justice." The pastoral letter, which was also published in Nedelja and Katolicki List on April 28, 1941, said the following:
Honourable brethren, there is not one among you who did not recently witness the most significant event in the life of the Croatian people among whom we act as herald of Christ's word. These are events that fulfilled the long-dreamed-of and desired ideal of our people.... You should, therefore, readily answer my call to do elevated work for the safeguarding and the progress of the Independent State of Croatia.... Prove yourselves, honourable brethren, and fulfill now your duty toward the young Independent State of Croatia.
The pastoral letter was read in every Croatian parish. It was also read over the radio. The impression it had on the people, and especially on the clergy, was indicated by Father Peter Glavas, who, during his trial after liberation, said in his own defense: "The order given by Archbishop Stepinac to the people over the radio to fight for the Independent State of Croatia constituted a political directive to the clergy." Like any other priest, he had to obey.”

It shows the Vatican does not believe in reconciliation only determined to sweep the ghosts of the past under the carpet so the world does realise the large involvement the Catholic church in Croatia had supporting the Ustashe during WWII.

Why should one be surprised when a former Hitler Youth becomes Pope? (Aleks, 7 June 2011 17:03)

And also why should one be surprised when a former Hitler Youth, now Pope, declines to recognize Kosovo?

As for the film Battle of the Neretva it is complete communist propaganda!

1. Knowing the Serbs they will in 50 years through a "special commission" "find out" that Croats actually killed 550 million Serbs in Jasenovac while at the same time listening to Gusle and eating barbecue...
(Hrvoje, 7 June 2011 20:48)
=============================

Nothing has changed in Croatia. You guys are beyond redemption judging by your words.
Are you denying what happened in Jasenovac?

Ask the Jews about their own history and they will tell you. Are you going to mock them too?
No amount of sarcasm is going to rewrite your history.
