They can make whatever stupid, cruel and disgusting film they want - they cannot call it A Serbian Film. This is bad taste and I can't believe that the Serbian Ministry of Culture let them do this.

I wouldn't like it if something like this had a title linking it to my nationality. On the surface, it's a slur on Serbia which has already received years of negative publicity.

On the other hand, people say that it's well made, well acted and delivers a type of slap in the face. It would take an awful lot to shock people to this extent.

Films like Hostel, Saw and some of the Japanese films are bad enough.

Personally, it is not these types of films that give me nightmares. It is more emotionally based films about war and human suffering which have the most impact. Films like Saviour, Soldier Blue and even Charlotte Grey.

There have been other great war films which chronicle human suffering and dehumanisation, many of them older black and white films. I don't remember the names, but I remember some heart rendering scenes vividly.

Some of these weren't even that 'graphic'.

It is pretty impressive in this day and age to create such a shocked reaction. Maybe it is supposed to shock people into realising how society has spun into a sickness where people are attracted to extreme violence as an entertainment.

But personally I will stay away and don't need that sort of sickness in my life. Maybe that is what the message is supposed to be.

I am against unnecessary censorship but would make exceptions. I think that Spain did the right thing, but inadvertently this reaction will publicise the film even more.

When it comes to young teenagers gaining access to this film (which they will) I don't think they will get any 'metaphors' - I think it could be damaging for them to see and share. There have to be limits, but where do you draw the line? (Maybe that's another 'message')

There's an interesting review on this film here [ http://thegibberingwig.wordpress.com/2010/09/08/a-serbian-film/ ].

I did some research and looks like the movie got funded by the serbian government. Is it true?

Probably, I wouldn't be surprised if the funds came from the IMF and other Western backers. This government is Western leaning after all. Quite disgusting really.

According to an interview with the director he defended himself saying something like this: "In the movie powerful people force the main character to do horrible things against his will. The powerful people are a metaphor for the empire and the main character who is forced to do things against his will is a metaphor for Serbia".

But as somebody said below it could just as well be interpreted as that the main character is a metaphor for the Serbian people and the powerful people are symbolizing the Milosevic government.

Good question everybody, lets do some detective work and find out who funded this sick project. Calling it a " Serbian Film" only proves that it is made to dehumanize a society. This type of of crap should not be allowed. This type of freedom only come from those that support Hollywood and its anti-Christian values.Good for Spain!

I'm also against censorship and find people who try to make films that deliberately shock just immature. What does bother me is that people want to watch this sort of stuff which goes under tha banner of "tortue porn".

I can find no entertainment in 2 hours of human suffering played out on a tv screen.

I've been a fan of Serbian & Yugoslav cinema for quite some time now. "When father was away on business", "Time of the gypsies" and "Underground" are some of the best movies I've ever seen. "Black cat white cat" was also very enjoyable.
"A Serbian film" was easily the sickest movie I've ever seen in my life and probably ever will. Having said that artistically it was truly well made. If you take away a couple of the truly sick scenes it'd have been even better.

Mark, Serbs wouldn't know who funds these anti-social films. The subject matter is very contra to Serbian society, but more of the US's and the EU's. I am sure it is outside money.

"What is the possible point of this film and why does it have to be so graphic?
(Patrik, 5 November 2010 18:38) "

It's an allegory - Serbia is an infant that is ... hmm, very badly treated by its government. According to a review that came out in a UK paper some months ago.

I've seen clips from this film and it is truly disturbing. I am against censorship, but there have to be limitations somewhere. What is the possible point of this film and why does it have to be so graphic?

A prime example of the product of a disturbed mind masquerading as an art form. The best way to confront such garbage is to ignore and boycott it. These projects should under no circumstances be funded or supported by official organs of the State. In fact artists should condemn gratuitously abusive themes, particularly those involving young people, as reprehensible and repugnant. Calling it 'a Serbian film' is even more embarrassing. Shame on them.

Just out of curiousity , I have neither seen nor heard of said film , but what on earth does labelling the film "a Serbian Film" have to do with the reported subject matter? Does anybody know what ethnicity the producers/directors are?
If this is a way to stir controversy and publicity , it is in poor taste and very stupid.

A horror movie that turns in to snuf pedophilia and necrofilia? I am curious to know who funds this sick projects?Any info about that Serbs?
