I was in Belgrade when the universiada was on in July. We were out at a night club and there were croat athletes with Croatia Jackets on. No one said a word.
Yet serbs cop more negativity from the media than any one else. Serbs are probably the most liberal people in the region but can't do much when they don't want to lick... Drive to croatia with serbian plates, fear the worst... drive to serbia with croat plates.... NOTHING....

Serbs vandalise and attack Croats or property all the time in Croatia but Serbian media refuses to publish it. They only publish negative stories about Croats and never positive stories.

""I dare any serb to wear a 'Croatian' or 'Albanian' jacket around Belgrade for a day. See what happens."

Actually there have been Croats wearing Croat team and other Croat jackets and sweatshirts in Belgrade for years. A guy who was mixed Croat, Slovenian and Serb had on a Croatian sweatshirt and nothing happened to him.

A person who is actually connected and part of a sports team should have a right to wear his teams jackets if the team is currently in town and competing as that is their official gear and what they are there for.

I agree with you that everyone should be able to wear their teams jackets however there are always a minority who will react to that - as the recent attacks on foreigners in Belgrade proved.

Had it been croatian fans instead of French, it would have been much worse.

In every country there are extermists groups and this kind of sport/ethnic related attacks will never stop fully.

I don't know why people are suprised about this.

this kind of things happens in most european countris, and considering there was a massive civil war in the region just over a decade ago, this is to be expected. I am not saying its right, but expected.

1) the manager of the Serb team shouldn't have to hide the fact that he is Serbian. He wasnt insulting anyone and this was a cowardy attack!! It's never a one on one attack. I guess that's frustration from a group of people that will have to wait another 5 years to see if their team will be in the WC.

2) to the gentleman walking around in NY in his SRBIJA jacket, we have the same situation here in Cleveland. Usually it's Croatians throwing insults but only if they outnumber you. It's a shame.

btw..... KOSOVO JE SRBIJA

I was just in Manhattan New York over the weekend and after Serbia beat Romania 5-0 to qualify for the World Cup i went out wearing my Nike Serbia jacket that the players wear. I got "threatened" (Kosovo is Albania you better watch what you wear here" and then something in Albanian that I did not understand but mentioned Kosovo) twice by two separate groups albanians. I passed by millions of people that night and possibly a lot more Albanians i am not sure but 2 groups decided to hurl insults my way.

Of course! We have a history of fighting each other that is still fresh in our minds. It does not make sense to wear your team jacket while walking around that other team's territory. Perhaps a Spaniard can wear his jacket in England or France and vice versa. However, our region is still tender and requires more time before this type of liberal and level-headed thinking catches on. It will be a long time before the rest of Europe recongnizes the Balkans as 'integrated'.

I agree with Croatia. But are you talking about Albania or Kosovo ? I have been in Albania, with other foreign tourists (visiting Butrint) and we had no incidents. I was clearly identified as Serb and I was scared. They were cold, but far from violent.

I would say croatia is just about right on level with "european standards." croatia and albania are the most intolerant countries in the region.
