A year before the Age of Catastrophes for Europe begun, an English author Norman Angell published a book called The Great Illusion. It argued that war among the European nations was impossible, because the economies of the European powers were too intertwined. Yet War erupted, followed by another in the next generation and all the events that you describe in your article. NATO gave good protection to a reemerging economically powerful Europe that was and remains a political dwarf. Economically, socially and culturally Europe and America are very interconnected, but politically their links were unequal. NATO obliges every country to rush to defend every other member, but does not provide a VETO power to the military dwarfs to restrain a military giant!
To achieve this NATO must evolve into a EU type structure with super-national institutions. Will the Americans ever be willing to give up some of their sovereignty? The history shows that the European nations did that only when they were not powerful enough to go in on their own.
If that proves the case, the EU will not have any other option than becoming a political and military power of their own. Whatever happens, the days Europe living happily in a US sponsored cocoon are numbered.
