John, LOL, I see you as (probably) a British know well the EU-slang, in particular the euphemism called "harmonization".

There is nothing humanitarian or "harmonic" about it, it's merely the way how to get more votes from deeply conservative, mistrusting and unwelcoming county simplicities Germany in particular is "famous" for, Switzerland, Austria, Italy being not very far from it.

But the idea to obligate people to use air travel is not good for many reasons, regional connections and ecology being probably the main. Other reasons like do exist, too - just consider, traveling by air from Beograd to London is actually the CHEAPEST way. And of course the "asylants" from Ghana won't parade on the KFOR-bridge or drive in an SUV between Horgos and Szeged in the middle of the day. They have different ways to cross the borders... without any visa.

Besides. It is relatively easy to sneak-in into Kosovo and there are enough reasonably priced flights from Pristina to Schengen-countries.

As for Belgrade or Budapest airport - with American passport I can walk past customs back and forth in both, no one did bother to stop me I did sneak in and out few times to help my family as they arrived with millions of bags. All the officials did see was a certain blue passport cover, inside could be a picture of Mickey Mouse or maybe this one:

Ataman,

That's why I keep saying that the EU should let people that fly from Belgrade aiport travel visa free. I know that this will be problematic for trave from places like Vrsac to Timosuar but it will be a good first baby step.

There's NO WAY that the EU will let Serbia into the Schenghen zone anytime othewise. (and by soon I mean within the next 5 years)

Yes it makes a ton of money for JAT, Lufthansa and other EU airlines. But it also gives Serbia a chance to prove itself to those skeptics in the EU who are just waiting to block this from happening.

I don't know what the next baby step would be, but it will be much easier for Serbia to argue "look, we've done this via Belgrade and there were no problems. Let's take it to the next level.

"full harmonization" = not-so-good news. In EU-talk it means: "Asyl-seeker obligation"

What it means: Serbia Proper and (for Albanians who read this: Kosovo, too) should adopt "Asylum-camps" where they /= Serbs, Albanians/ can "store" the asylum-applicants from certain countries, all from their budget.

Not to forget: from point of view of the involved "Asyl" countries, even Kosovo is a paradise on Earth and 1000 year ahead of them.

An example, how it works. In the town hall meeting somewhere in Bavaria the local politician will explain, that while now Jovan Jovanovic (or maybe Mehmet Berisha) can travel visa-free, the close-by asylum-seeker camp will disappear, everyone will be transfered to Western Balkans and Jovan Jovanovic (or Mehmet Berisha) will pay for that.

Ultimately it's a trade: a more "clean an nice" Ausländer may come, but pay for less welcomed one to be "uploaded" into his own country.

More precise example:

- Everyone from the Middle East will be "uploaded" on Serbia Proper
- Everyone from sub-Saharan Africa whom Italy is not to happy with will be "uploaded" on close-by.... your guess.

There aren't many Ghanian or Ethiopian restaurants in Beograd or Pristina, but that may change quite soon.

There is probably no other way and all this has to happen, but be warned, the "White List" is not ought to be for free.
Also don't be scared of these "horrible Asyl criminals". They are somehow much less apparent in East European EU countries, only Italian, German, Austrian, Swiss newspapers are full of that BS. No, German / Italian / Austrian / Swiss hillbillies are NOT racist... ;)
