For rolerkoster:

All of Serbia's neighbors are in favor of joining the EU. Croatia and Macedonia are EU candidate states, Montenegro,Bosnia,Kosovo and Albania are also in favor of joining the EU.

Why is Serbia choosing a different path?

Mircea: "What alternative does Serbia have if she does not join the EU?"

"Europe" is a model for living together of diferent nations. It is a project beyond the nation state.
In a crowded continent with a long history of wars and rivalities the project proved amazingly successful.
But the Serbs have their big doubts. The have once disolved their national state in 1918 in order to enter something "greater", with disastrous consecuenses. Since they see no fault of their own for the desolution of Yugoslavia, they are weary to risk their soveregnity once again. Plus, they are annoyed by the proposition Eurointegration to be seen as a remedy for the 'loss' of former Yugoslav territories they claim to be theirs. To the question: So what if Kosovo gets independendent, if you both join "Europe", they mormaly respond with: "Why Kosovo does not "stay" within Serbia and then both join "Europe" as a unit. How could Serbia be properly governed with 2 million Kosovars as its citizens, is a question that remeins anansweared! So your question will also stay inansweared! Because there is no logical answear, but a strong emotion! The Serb nationalists simply see in the proces of Eurointegration an acceptance of the outcome of the Yugoslav wars - the emergence of a rump Serbia. "Rump" Croatia, "rump" Hungary, "rump" Bulgaria and "rump" Albania seam to have accepted the European remedy of healing past territorial wonds, especially after the collapse of Yugoslavia and the creation of several mini states. Many Serbian nationalist however could not be reconciled with the fact that those nations, traditionaly viewed as smaller and "less influential" could now be either bigger, or wealthier or more influential than Serbia. They still hope for a miraculous turn about of the events that would create an "undivided" Serbia which then will get its "dignified" entry in Europe as a number one of the Balkans. The longer they postpone their eurointegration, the more fancyful such an outcom will seam.

Serbia is the only alternative for Serbia, Mircea.

until now, all the political forces refused to ask the citizens in Serbia, whether they choose the EU as an option - or not.

at the moment it looks like the issue is Delic's private hobby ... as he has no mandate from the majority of citizens.

For all Serbs:

I have a question for those who are opposed to EU membership. What alternative does Serbia have if she does not join the EU?
