The likelihood of Pope Francis canonizing Croatian Catholic cleric Alojzije Stepinac is low, Croatian media are reporting this week.

The Pope should not vacillate. He should declare that Stepinac will never be a suitable candidate for sainthood. There is too much dirty washing surrounding the memory of Stepinac, and he is used as a figure head for the nasty Nazi mentality that pollutes Croatian history and still pollutes Croatian society and politics.
What would be more impressive than the Vatican ruling against Stepinac would be the Croatian people standing up for decency and agreeing.
