The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that Croatia has been discriminating against Roma children by segregating their classes in elementary schools. The Strasbourg-based court stated that Croatia has violated the European convention on Human Rights. Zagreb has been instructed to pay EUR 4,500 and another EUR 10,000 for court costs to every complainant. According to the court’s announcement, nine out of 17 judges ruled that Croatia had committed discrimination against Roma children. ECHR: Croatia discriminating against Roma children The lawsuit was filed by 15 former students, Croatian citizens of Roma ethnicity, born between 1988 and 1994. They stated that the division in schools had been based on nationality and that it had violated their rights to education. Zagreb, however, claims that the purpose of those classes was to help Roma children achieve the same educational level as other children their age. One of the organizations that initiated the proceedings before the ECHR was the European Roma Rights Center (ERRC). ERRC Spokesman Dzavit Berisha told BBC that he was pleased with the verdict, but that Roma are still facing discrimination in many facets of life. “It is happening and we have this problem that Roma are facing, not only in Croatia but in other countries as well. Governments must take responsibility and provide equality and integration into the society we belong to,” he said.
