Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic held a meeting with EU ambassadors in Belgrade, who expressed full support to Serbia’s efforts to become a EU member. The Serbian PM was a guest of honor at a working lunch with the ambassadors, organized by the Chief of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert and Spanish Ambassador Inigo de Palacio Espana. The PM and the ambassadors also exchanged opinions about the political and economic situation in Serbia and regional cooperation,” a statement from the meeting held in Belgrade on Wednesday reads. Cvetkovic reminded the ambassadors about the government and society’s strong determination regarding Serbia’s European orientation and accession to the EU which is supported by the EU candidacy application in December 2009, it further said. The premier explained the economic situation in Serbia and the future prospects, and presented the results of the implementation of the Interim Trade Agreement and stressed the significance of the improvement of the regional cooperation. He also mentioned the most important laws that had been adopted during the previous year and announced further intensive actions in the EU integration process. Degert pointed out the positive achievements in the relations between Serbia and the EU in 2009 which had been marked by implementation of visa liberalization and the Interim Trade Agreement. He stressed the practical advantage for “ordinary citizens” who could now travel visa-free, as well as new possibilities for the business community and investors. Degert also stated that the year ahead would bringing both new chances and challenges after Serbia had submitted its bid for the EU candidacy. He said that it was “necessary to maintain the momentum in the relations between Serbia and the EU and continue the reform process.” The EU ambassadors also expressed their full support to this process, the statement said.
