A state secretary with the Ministry of Defense stated that Serbia faces its greatest security threat from the illegal declaration of Kosovo's independence. Spasojevic added that he expects the government to adopt a draft Strategy Of National Defense by the end of February, and to send this document to parliament immediately after. He specified that criticism heard of the draft so far includes remarks "about the role of ethnic minority communities in the security system, and the position regarding NATO". Spasojevic said that the ministry is making efforts to have all citizens, including the minorities, take part in the national security system in line with laws, and that the issue of Serbia's NATO membership is "primarily political". "Not only our army, but also the state of Serbia would enter a military-political alliance, or if you will, a political-military alliance such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization," he concluded.
