Zeljko Bodrozic, editor of Kikindske weekly, paid a EUR 200 fine yesterday. The fine came because the journalist slandered Dmitar Segrt, a former senior official in the Slobodan Milsevic regime. Journalist pays fine for slandering former regime official Bodrozic was taken in by Kikinda police early on March 25. He paid the fine after police in the Vojvodina town told him that he faced 18 days in prison unless he paid the fine before midnight. Over the past two years, Bodrozic has paid a total of EUR 6,200 in fines stemming from libel lawsuits. After news of his detention broke out, Bodrozic met with Ministry of Justice representatives with whom he arranged to contact the Committee for Human and Minority Rights. Bodrozic told Beta news agency after the meeting that he was pleased with the authorities' reaction and said he hoped that his case would elicit action this time, unlike before. Bodrozic was found guilty by the Kikinda Municipal Court in 2002 of slandering Dmitar Segrt. The verdict was later confirmed by the Zrenjanin Municipal Court. The local judiciary rejected complaints lodged by Bodrozic's attorneys after which his legal team lodged a complaint with the UN Human Rights Committee which it adopted. The authorities have repeatedly promised to compensate Bodrozic, but have yet to do this. Bodrozic's detention by police was strongly condemned by numerous journalists associations.
