Russian oil and gas giant Gazprom chiefs met in Belgrade Tuesday with top Serbian officials. After the meeting with President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, Gazrpom and Gazexport CEOs Alexei Miller and Aleksandr Medvedev said that they view participation in the Serbian oil monopoly NIS privatization, development of a natural gas transport route known as the South Stream pipeline through Serbia, and potential construction of underground gas depots, as "a single project." Gazprom after NIS via pipeline? "The deadlines for making a decision on of the projects and timeframe for their realization are parallel, so they should be seen as one complex project," Gazprom said in a statement after the meetings. Besides this, the two sides considered establishing a joint Russian-Serbian company, the statement said. Kostunica said, during the meeting, that it was in Serbia's interest to continue cooperation with Gazprom, a global leader in the field of energy. A statement issued by the government also said that talks concluded Serbia could in turn become the regional leader in natural gas distribution. Today's talks will be followed by a series of regular meetings to expand the energy sector cooperation, the statement said. Tadic's cabinet said in an announcement of its own that "numerous forms of cooperation and joint investment have been considered, particularly the possibility that a part of the South Stream pipeline could run through Serbia." Energyobserever Editor Sijka Pistolova told the BBC today that the Russian and Serbian officials were least likely to have discussed the South Stream, although that project is in Serbia's strategic interest. "Messrs Medvedev and Miller are in Belgrade in order to try and persuade President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica to let them buy the majority NIS package," Pistolova said earlier today. "Just as a reminder, the privatization adviser for NIS told the previous cabinet, and the cabinet went with the suggestion, to sell only 25 percent of NIS shares in the first privatization phase," she continued. The fact that Gasprombank representatives were also a part of the Russian delegation that arrived in Belgrade today speaks for itself, she added. Pistolova expects the bank to take on the role of a financier as joint Serbian and Republic of Srpska power corporations' projects take shape, most notably Buk Bijla dam and power plant, but also six other potential power plants, along the length of the Drina River.
