ASTANA Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that there is still a prospect for peace in Syria and that the world must not miss this opportunity. "I'm sure there's a chance for peace in Syria," Lavrov said in an address to students in Kazakhstan on Thursday, and welcomed the decision of Damascus to accept a Russian proposal to place the Syrian chemical weapons under international supervision. Lavrov: There's still chance for peace in Syria Lavrov today traveled to Geneva, where he will meet with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, with whom he will discuss the Russian proposal. Because of this meeting U.S. President Barack Obama asked his country's Congress to postpone a decision on launching a military intervention in Syria. Kerry said that in Geneva "the seriousness of the Russian proposal" would be tested, and that he hoped that it will enable for rapid creation of records and isolation of all stockpiles of chemical weapons owned by the Syrian army, "and rough estimates show it is about 1,000 tons." Obama launched the initiative earlier for "a limited" military action against Syria, accusing the Syrian army that has used chemical weapons against rebels and civilians. But Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the poison was used by insurgents to provoke action of the West against the regime of the Syrian head of state Bashar al- Assad. (Beta/AP, file) Tanjug
