MADRID Elections in Spain’s Catalonia region are under way since 9:00 CET on Sunday and will not close until 20:00. Opinion polls indicate that current Catalan President Artur Mas and his conservative Convergence and Union party will take the majority of the 135 seats in the regional assembly known as the Parlament. Leaders of the main parties taking part in the early elections posed for photographs in Barcelona yesterday, however despite the appearance of unity the campaign has been one of the fiercest battles in recent times. The People’s Party is hoping to take second spot in the polls. Their candidate Alicia Sanchez-Camacho has campaigned on a message that leaving Spain and the EU would lead to economic disaster. Frustration over high unemployment and a deep recession have fuelled a separatist resurgence in Catalonia, where recent surveys have revealed that more than half of residents in the region want to break away from Spain.
