Italian investigators are trying to find out details of a shipment of powerful explosive that they say is too large even for the mafia. Police seized seven tonnes of RDX in Calabria at the end of August but kept the find under wraps until this week. Italian explosives find "too big for Mafia" The cargo was hidden on a Liberian-registered ship and is believed to have come from Iran. Police say it is too much for use only by the Calabrian mafia, the N’drangheta. The head of the regional police force, Carmelo Casabona, said: “The N’drangheta deals with lots of criminal activities in our country but I think it is impossible that they could lead such an international affair.” RDX is usually reserved for military and industrial purposes; it has been used in Italian mafia bombings before but never in such quantities. The ship, owned by Italian-Swiss company MSC, is thought to have been destined for Syria.
