Dozens of people were injured when a car-bomb exploded at a crowded cafe in a popular Russian holiday city. The explosion in Pyatigorsk was the second bloody attack within a number of hours in Russia’s North Caucasus. Car-bomb injures dozens in North Caucasus The regional governor said the device contained a hefty 30-kilos of explosives. The prosecutor’s office called the attack a ‘terrorist act’. The mainly Muslim North Caucasus has been plagued by violence in the ten years since Russia put down separatists in Chechnya. But the latest attacks were in predominantly Christian regions. In North Ossetia, just hours before the cafe bomb, a police officer was killed at a checkpoint when a suicide bomber detonated a device near the border with Ingushetia. Mindful of how close the blasts are to the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, President Medvedev has ordered the security service, the FSB, to investigate the explosions.
