Top U.S. military officer arrives in Pakistan The top U.S. military officer arrived in Pakistan Saturday, the same day security officials say a U.S. drone attack killed 16 militants in northwest Pakistan. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen is in Islamabad and is scheduled to meet with Pakistan's army chief, General Ashfaq Kayani, whose recent three-year extension is seen by some as a sign of continuity in Pakistan's battle against Islamic extremists. On the eve of Mullen's trip to Pakistan, he acknowledged U.S. worries over extremist sanctuaries in Pakistan. However, Mullen said, speaking in India, he is confident the weapons the U.S. is selling to Pakistan are being used to fight al-Qaida and related terrorist groups. Authorities said Saturday's missile attack that killed the militants was in the South Waziristan region along the Afghan border, where the U.S. has recently increased drone attacks. Officials say the nationalities of the militants were not immediately available. Pakistan's northwestern tribal regions are considered strongholds of al-Qaida and the Taliban.
