BP is managing to collect at least a third of the oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico since it put a containment cap over the broken pipe on the sea bed. The company now hopes to gradually increase the collection rate by closing vents in the cap. Progress in US oil spill siphoning efforts As for the U.S. President, he is trying to show Americans that he has BP under control. Barack Obama gave his weekly address to the nation from the spill zone in Grand Isle, Louisiana, saying: “This week, the federal government sent BP a preliminary bill for USD 69mn to pay back American taxpayers for some of the costs of the response so far. In addition, after an emergency safety review, we are putting in place aggressive new operating standards for offshore drilling. And I have appointed a bipartisan commission to look into the causes of this spill.” BP may have started to contain the leak but a permanent solution does not look likely until August when two relief wells should be ready for use. In the meantime, the oil that has already spilled into the Gulf is becoming ever more evident on the shoreline. More is on its way and it seems it will be a long time before BP and the White House can wash their hands of this problem, once and for all.
