The Ukrainian prime minister has abandoned her legal challenge of the recent presidential election but insists she was cheated of victory. Yulia Tymoshenko launched her appeal last week armed with what she said was proof that rival Viktor Yanukovich had rigged the election. Reluctant Tymoshenko throws in towel But she backed down this morning, claiming the court’s verdict would not be a fair one. She told reporters: “Given the fact that the court refuses to establish the truth I withdrew my appeal during the morning session of the Supreme Administrative Court and addressed the court, requesting it to stop this spectacle, which in no way resembles the work of justice.” Tymoshenko still insists her rival stole the election, despite assurances from international monitors that the vote was free and fair. Yanukovich now looks set to be sworn in as Ukraine’s president on Thursday. Tymoshenko will still be prime minister, but her days in that post seem numbered. Yanukovich may now rally parliament to oust her in a confidence vote and if that fails, he can call snap parliamentary elections.
