“Yanukovich is not our president,” declared Ukraine’s Yulia Tymoshenko in a defiant televised message on Saturday. Tymoshenko believes she was cheated out of the job in last weekend’s election. And, in her first real public appearance since being narrowly beaten by her rival Viktor Yanukovich, the prime minister vowed to contest the result in court. Her refusal to concede to Yanukovich flies in the face of international monitors’ official endorsement of his election. Tymoshenko, however, insists some individual observers are ready to back her claims. With electoral authorities expected to formally confirm Yanukovich’s victory next week, his supporters remain mobilised on the streets. But Tymoshenko said she won’t be calling people out in mass protests like those in the 2004 Orange Revolution when Yanukovich’s election was overturned as fraudulent.
