Ombudsman: Society should prevent violence against children

In an press release, issued on the eve of International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, Jankovic says that UNICEF data shows that violence against children remains extremely widespread and that in 2013, more than 3,500 families in Serbia were on the records of social welfare centers for violence against children, taking place mostly in the form of physical neglect and abuse.

Jankovic adds that more than two-thirds of students have witnessed violence in schools, ranging all the way from peer violence to teacher violence against students, and a large number of students reported experiencing or witnessing gender-based violence in schools.

Although some progress has been made in combating violence against children, the Ombudsman is calling on the competent authorities to make further efforts to prevent violence against the youngest in Serbia and to prepare a zero tolerance policy to tackle the problem more efficiently.
