A five-year-old child in Nis has been infected with the HIV virus, the public health institute in that southern town has said.

She also revealed that of the eight newly diagnosed cases, five patients have already developed AIDS.

The doctor warned that testing prevents situations where the virus is discovered only when the disease had already developed, and added that while "few people are tested ," but that a recent campaign at a student dorm saw many voluntarily undergo the test, while no new cases were discovered on that occasion.

Of the newly discovered HIV cases in 2014, six were men and two women, Kocić said, and added that there had been 147 HIV-positive patients in this town since 1987, 117 of them men, while 55 have died of AIDS.

The Public Health Institute Milan Jovanović Batut announced on World AIDS Day that there are currently 1,931 HIV-positive patients in Serbia, while estimates show that another 1,100 persons are likely unaware that they had been infected.
