BELGRADE The fires on Mt. Tara, western Serbia, have been localized, Serbian Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic told Tanjug on Monday. According to reports from the mountain earlier on Monday, wildfires on Tara destroyed an area of around 1,730 hectares. Wildfires on Mt. Tara are now "localized" On Monday morning, two aircrafts and two helicopters took part in the firefighting operation. About 800 people were involved in the operation. A number of flights by two Russian aircraft and two helicopters were organized on Sunday to finally put the fire in that region under control, MUP Emergency Sector chief Predrag Maric told Tanjug on Sunday. The fires that engulfed several regions in Serbia over the past few days were put under control and most of them are now localized. The fire at Vuckovica near Knic, central Serbia, was extinguished while the fire at Vrska Cuka near Zajecar, eastern Serbia, was localized, he said. The fire at Vrska Cuka is a small one, burning mostly grass and an occasional tree stump, and will be put out very soon, said Maric. We plan to redirect agricultural aircraft to flush the area with water tomorrow, Maric said. He said the situation was under control in the region of Prokuplje, southern Serbia, where the fire in the village of Rgaje had sparked anew Sunday morning. Head of the forest management department in Prokuplje Stojan Bjelic said that about 200 hectares of farms and meadows had been razed in the fires that were still blazing in the villages of Srednji Statovac, Bregovina and Rankova Reka. He said that the fire in the Rgaje village threatened several residential facilities, but there was no need for an evacuation for now.
