Serbia is first in Europe in terms of the number of abortions and last when it comes to the use of contraceptive pills and hormone spirals, says daily Politika. According to official statistics, one in two Serbian women do not use contraception, while, every year 150,000 abortions are carried out. Daily: Serbia tops abortion league table The most common cases are married women or women in long-term relationships, while 6,000 women between the ages of 16 and 19 decide to terminate their pregnancies on an annual basis. Gynaecologist Dejan Stojanovic from the Narodni Front hospital warns that abortions carry a high risk of infection, haemorrhaging and other injuries that can lead to sterility in later life. According to Snezana Pantic-Aksentijevic, an adviser at the Health Ministry and head of the Public Health Group, state assistance exists in this domain, though it is insufficient to raise awareness among women in Serbia. The ministry’s goal, she says, is to reduce the number of abortions by raising contraceptive usage through public health campaigns.
