Serbian trucks have been allowed to enter Ukraine after being prevented to do so fo several days, it has been confirmed. The temporary permit issued today will last through Nov. 24. Trucks released from Ukraine border Some of the 45 Serbian trucks previously stranded on the Romanian-Ukrainian border have in the meantime been released. Dragisa Orbovic of the Orwell carrier told Beta that in the past several months Serbian companies paid between EUR 300 and 320 for transit fees through Ukraine, "because permit issuing quotas were spent". "The quotas are agreed on by relevant ministries of the two countries," Orbovic said, and added that at the same time, Ukrainian companies are paying EUR 38 for transit through Serbia. A group of some 30 international carriers from Serbia last night protested in front of the Ukrainian embassy in Belgrade. The carriers say the permits have been annulled without any explanation, causing a number of Serbian trucks to remain trapped on the Romanian-Ukrainian border. They parked about ten freight vehicles in front of the embassy, unhappy with a revoked permit that allowed them to cross the Ukrainian border and transit through that country. Dejan Colovic, representing one of the companies that took part in the protest, specified that 45 of their colleagues have been stranded on the border crossing for several days now. "We are pleading with our institutions and the Ministry of Transport to help us wih this, so that we can avoid a general strike, because 45 people are staying put for days under all sorts of pressures, unsafe, with goods taken off the trucks. We cannot help them in any way other than this." The Romanian side is also preventing the carriers' personnel from crossing the border and returning home. Another protestor, Ljubisa Orbovic, says the Serbian companies received a notice from a Ukrainian agency with jurisdiction in the matter, but that it remains unclear why the trucks are not allowed to cross that country's border, and adds that the carriers are suffering huge losses. They have announced a big protest in front of the Serbian government headquarters on Monday. The trucking companies will demand that the procedure for issuing of international permits be made public, in order to avoid similar problems in the future.
