A Kosovo police spokesman says the search for the inmates that escaped Saturday from the Dubrava prison is ongoing. Veton Elshani stated Sunday that several hundred Kosovo Police Service (KPS) members, NATO Mission in Kosovo (KFOR) soldiers and UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) policemen were engaged in the search for the seven fugitives. Kosovo: Search for runaway inmates The search involved an aircraft and a helicopter. “We conducted an extensive inspection within a ten-mile radius of the prison, spreading the search onto the entire territory of Kosovo Sunday afternoon,” the police spokesman said. He also stated that one of the inmates got hold of a gun prior to the escape, adding that the probe into how it could have had happened was immediately initiated. “Four security guards have been interrogated in relation to the incident,” he said, as the KPS subsequently released a statement indicating that the guards have been suspected of assisting the escape. The group of seven prisoners, including Burim Basha, Amir Sopa, Astrit Shabani, Ramadan Shuti, Davit Morina and Lirim Jakupi and group leader Faton Hajrizi, managed to break out from the Dubrava prison near Istok at 4:15 p.m. Saturday. The men were found guilty of various criminal offences including murder, attempted murder, acts of terrorism, robbery and kidnapping. Elshani stressed the fugitives were armed and posed danger to the public. The police published their photographs, appealing to citizens to report any information relevant to the search.
