A Sandžak Democratic Party (SDP) branch in town said the decision was a “gesture of intolerance”, as well as that not eating pork had a meaning deeper than religious when it came to Muslims, being “a part of the national identity, preservation of tradition and backbone of education”.

“The incident is jeopardizing good ethnic relations and needs to be solved quickly, but without raising tensions,” a party statement read.

“If parents were to lodge an official complaint, all we can do is to prepare meals separately,” municipal president Branislav Dilparić told journalists.

According to the 2002 census data, some 7.5 percent of Nova Varoš residents declared themselves as Bosniaks, while the remaining population is ethnically Serb.
