Austria's restrictions violate EU law - commissioner
"Austria is one of the most burdened EU member states and has reached the limits of its endurance," said Mikl-Leitner, adding that was important that each country along the Balkan route acts restrictively on their borders, "and this domino effect is more effective if we are harmonized.European Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos, however, sent a letter to the Austrian government indicating that Vienna is violating EU law, and that the country must accept asylum applications without restriction.
About 700,000 migrants entered Austria last year, mostly fleeing the conflicts in Syria and Afghanistan, and about 90,000 have applied for asylum in that country. Most of them, however, continued on to Germany.
