Croatia today marks the Independence Day. On October 8, 1991 the Croatian parliament made a unanimous decision to secede from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Croat President Ivo Josipovic, Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor and parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks laid wreaths on monuments to the victims, fallen soldiers and former President Franjo Tudjman’s grave in Zagreb on Saturday. Croatia marks Independence Day The president also laid a wreath to the National Heroes monument and grave of Ivica Racan, who was Croatia’s prime minister from 2000 until 2003. “Croatia as a state has done plenty in the past 20 years, it preserved independence in a difficult and bloody war, but it also implemented numerous reforms thanks to which it is close to signing the treaty with the EU,” Josipovic pointed out. “There is still many things we need to do, primarily in the economy, which really is not doing well, and there are also further challenges regarding building of democracy and human rights,” he told reporters. Kosor said that Croatia was marking the 20th anniversary of its independence as a proud, sovereign and independent state which had become a NATO member and completed the EU accession talks. The president also laid a wreath to the National Heroes monument and grave of Ivica Račan, who was Croatia’s prime minister from 2000 until 2003.
