Hungary "defended" Serbia

Member of the Delegation of Serbia in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Elvira Kovač, stated that Hungary was asked about not voting for the admission of the so-called Kosovo in SE.

She said that at the plenary session, one of the guests was the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Peter Szijjártó, who, among other things, said that it was not the time to talk about the membership of the so-called Kosovo in various international organizations, including the Council of Europe.

Kovač told Tanjug that the main topic of Monday's session was the war in Ukraine, and that Szijjártó spoke about that conflict "from a different angle."

"He began his presentation by saying that most people will not like what he has to say. He said that the most important thing for Hungary is that peace be reached as soon as possible, and that Hungary does not think the best solution is to compete in who will have more weapons to deliver to Ukraine because it is not a contribution to peace," Kovac said.

He added that after his presentation, one of the MPs asked the head of Hungarian diplomacy why Hungary voted against the admission of the so-called Kosovo to the Council of Europe, despite the fact that it recognized its independence.

According to Kovač, Szijjártó said that Hungary stands for stability in the Western Balkans, and that until any results are seen when it comes to the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina, it is not time to talk about the membership of the so-called Kosovo in various international organizations, including the Council of Europe.

On behalf of the Serbian delegation, Kovač asked Szijjártó about the rights of national minorities, after which the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs praised Serbia and added that relations between Hungary and Serbia are at a high level, partly because Belgrade accepts constructive proposals from representatives of national minorities.

He stated that during the summer session, which lasts until Friday, Special Rapporteur will be elected who will deal with Pristina's request for membership in the Council of Europe.
