Deputy PM and leader of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) Ivica Dacic says there are no formal or legal reasons to call early elections at this point. This is because the country has a stable parliamentary majority, he asserted. Dacic: No reason to call elections for now Dacic believes that there are no political reasons or conflicts that could force SPS to break up its coalition with the Democratic Party (DS). Earlier this week, Dacic suggested to his coalition partners to "do as Slobodan Milosevic would've done" and call early elections. In an interview for the Belgrade-based daily Blic today, Dacic said that the biggest opposition party and the central party in the government coalition have agreed that elections should be called before their regular deadline. He also said that the two parties agreed that obtaining EU candidate status is the country's national interest. Dacic recalled that the topic of early elections was discussed at several meetings of leadership of the opposition Serb Progressive Party (SNS) and the ruling DS, and added that he did not take part in these talks. SNS party leader Tomislav Nikolic, meanwhile, has been on a hunger strike for a week, attempting to force early elections in the country. Ivica Dacic (Tanjug, file)
