Serbia could accede to the Schengen white list on January 1, 2010, says a source close to the government involved in talks with EU officials. According to daily Danas’s source, the political decision on this at EU level could be taken in the middle of next year after the European Parliament elections that are being held in all of the member-states. "White Schengen from Jan. 1, 2010" The source says that Germany is among the fiercest opponents of introducing a visa-free regime for Serbia or any other countries in the region and its position is unlikely to “soften“. It was at Germany’s insistence that a new criteria was added for Serbia’s eligibility whereby the visa-rejection rate should not exceed three percent and the illegal entry rate should be no higher than 1,000 persons a year—conditions, the source says, that are very hard to meet.
