Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic will attend the UN General Committee session in New York on Wednesday. He will request the committee to include Serbia's draft resolution to request the International Court of Justice, ICJ, opinion on the legality of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo in the forthcoming UN General Assembly session agenda. Jeremic in New York ahead of UN GA Jeremic will address the 28 committee member-states and reiterate once again the importance of the resolution which calls for the ICJ advisory opinion, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday. Jeremic late on Monday spoke to Serbia's national broadcaster RTS and said that the ICJ initiative will represent a “very difficult fight”, adding, however, that over the past few weeks, official Belgrade had done "much in order to lessen the opposition of certain influential countries in the world". “We have succeeded in making a number of countries take our side. I think we have reason to be optimistic, but nothing is certain till the very voting on Wednesday. This is why I will travel to New York, where I will present the issue at the top level,” Jeremic said. He underlined that in case Serbia's initiative were to be rejected at the UN General Assembly, the decision would be the first in the history of this world organization, in cases when a country demanded ICJ's legal opinion. “It remains to be seen whether other countries will allow that such a horrifying precedent be made and that for the first time in the history someone will be forbidden to address the International Court of Justice. I think we have reason to be optimistic,” the foreign minister concluded. Meanwhile, Labor Minister Rasim Ljajic announced he will lobby for the support of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in New York on Tuesday over Serbia's initiative. "I expect that a vast majority of Muslim countries will support our initiative at the UN General Assembly requesting the opinion of the International Court of Justice about the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo, in view of the fact that just six of them have recognized Kosovo so far," Ljajic told Tanjug. This is his first meeting on this occasion with the head of the OIC Office in New York and Qatar chief of mission, Ljajic said and added that he would then meet with the chiefs of mission of Uganda, Emirates, Kuwait and Oman. Ljajic heads the Serbian delegation in the meeting of the Executive Committee of UNICEF in New York.
