Dragan Sutanovac and Zdravko Ponos paid a visit to Serbian military forces in the south of the country today. The goal of the visit by the defense minister and the army’s commander-in-chief was to become familiar with the capabilities of the 4th Infantry Brigade in the Ground Safety Zone, who are responsible for guarding 92 kilometers of the administrative line with Kosovo. He said that it was in the military’s best interests to complete construction of the base. Commander of the 4th Brigade, Colonel Milosav Simovic, said that this base was of strategic interest and very important for the security of the entire region and its residents. “We are disappointed that the police have pulled out of the project, but nonetheless, we want to finish it in order to provide our troops with adequate living conditions,” Sutanovac said. He expects work on the base to begin in March and to last until the end of 2008. The defense minister will meet with municipal leaders in the south and expects Albanian leaders in the Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja municipalities to ask for military forces to be withdrawn from the region.
