Branimir Glavas, currently awaiting war crimes trial in a hospital, has resigned as president of Osijek City Council. He is accused of killing Serb civilians in Osijek, Croatia, in 1991. Glavas resigns from city council However, Glavas stated that he had resigned because of the lack of transparency in the financing of a sports arena, costing some EUR 123.3 mn, supported by Osijek Mayor Anto Dapic, head of an extremist party, the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP). Glavas is the founder and informal leader of the Croatian Democratic League of Slavonija and Baranje (HDSSB). He said that lack of transparency in the spending of budget money and efforts to perpetuate rumors of a secret agreement in an effort to try and force Dapic out of office, are the reasons for his resignation. Glavas said that elections are "a better and cheaper solution to taking money from the citizens of Osijek", and filling private pockets. The dissolution of the HSP- HDSB coalition is expected tomorrow, when Dapic is expected to also resign. However, the issue of building the sports centre for the handball championships is still on the city agenda.
