Croatian brewery investigation

The company, Karlovačka Pivovara d.o.o, which is owned by the Dutch Heineken group, is also under investigation, the investigative judge at the court in the town of Karlovac, Jasminka Jerinić Musnjak, said.

The five include the brewery's technical director, chief engineer and those in charge of work safety and environment.

An elderly man who had been walking his dog near the brewery in Karlovac, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of Zagreb, fell into a coma and his dog died. Tests showed the victim and his pet had both suffered from from inhaling high concentrations of carbon dioxide.

Prosecutors claim that because of a defect in processing carbon dioxide, the management decided to release it into the local sewage system through which it ended up in a local stream near where the victim was walking.

Karlovačka pivovara - which produces Karlovačko beer as well as Heineken - said it was cooperating in the investigation and would "respect all the legal consequences."
