Politika: Too many airports

If Niš, a regional and economic center of southern Serbia, is unable to sell half of seats on a passenger jet on a single flight, the question needs to be asked: how can Serbia utilize its decent airport network and is any investment in such structures profitable.

Besides Niš, there are other airports with concrete runways, such as Ponikve – between Mt. Zlaltibor and Mt. Tara in western Serbia, Lađevci – located between Čačak and Kraljevo in central Serbia, as well as Sombor and Kovin in Vojvodina.

These airports were built by the former Yugoslav army (JNA), and were not designed for civilian use. It was only in mid-1970’s that the Niš airport was used for passenger traffic, while Ponikve was activated a decade later, during the economic sanctions, when Jat could only fly to Podgorica and Tivat. Low demand cancelled flights soon after in both cases.

At this point, Niš is in the best position, due to Konstantin Veliki airport serving as an alternative to the Belgrade airport. It can also count on seasonal traffic, flights to Montenegro and Turkey, while taking on Kopaonik-bound passengers in the winter.

All this shows that Serbia at this point has more airports than it in fact needs.

Unfortunately, we are not in a position similar to that of Croatia, which utilized almost all the airports after the breakup of the former country. The best example may be the Zadar airport, nowadays hosting Lufthansa’s pilot school. Our neighbors have even built a new airport near Supetar on Brac, to support their tourism, used by small aircraft with guests from all over Europe.

Bosnia-Herzegovina, however, remains unable to secure regular traffic for the Mostar airport, which acts as an alterative for airports in Sarajevo and Dubrovnik. The situation is similar in Macedonia, and even in Slovenia, where Maribor remains in the shadow of Ljubljana and Vienna.
