A conference of war crimes prosecutors from the former Yugoslavia has got under way in Brussels, with Serbian Prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic in attendance. The purpose of the meeting is to strengthen regional cooperation in the areas of investigation and criminal prosecution. Regional prosecutors gather in Brussels Hague Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz told the conference that it was important for valuable material from investigations to be brought before domestic courts, in line with the Hague Tribunal’s transition strategy. Ahead of the conference, the Hague stated that it remained committed to continuing cooperation with national war crimes prosecutions and judicial authorities, which would receive the remaining case files and with which the Hague would share information and knowledge gathered. Serbian prosecution spokesman Bruno Vekaric informed Tanjug that EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn had said that regional cooperation was important for reconciliation in the region. Rehn believes that the Western Balkans are a part of Europe, that they all belong in Europe, and that full cooperation with the Hague is one of the conditions for successful EU integration. The commissioner said that regional cooperation was “the heart of European policy towards the Western Balkans.” Today’s conference was organized by the Hague Tribunal Prosecution, with financial support from the European Commission.
