Serbian public debt reaches EUR 10.54bn It is a third of the value that is produced by the money gained from taxing citizens, but the government continues to claim the debt is not too great. The public debt is a significant measure of the economic policy of all countries, because the debt the government goes into in order to finance construction, infrastructure projects and other important projects, benefits the citizens, but in Serbia, the credit also pays for the functioning of state institutions. According to statistics, if every citizens was to get an equal part of the money taken out in loans by the state, every citizen would receive RSD 150,000 (about EUR 1,500). Since the payment of the public debt is essentially a responsibility of the budget, and taxpayers fill the budget most, it is estimated that each citizen of Serbia would have to pay about EUR 4,500 in order to pay for the entire public debt of the state.
